KAL1 May Moon Track - Windstorm Recovery
On 9th June 2021, a severe windstorm in the Dandenong Ranges caused thousands of trees to fall
over, with significant impacts on houses, the local community and forests. You can see the large gap
in the tree canopy above and below this point, where tornedo-like winds blew up the valley from the
south-east.
Nature is doing an amazing job of regenerating. Many shrubs and ferns resprouted soon after the
storm, while Mountain Ash and Blackwoods germinated from seed. Lyrebirds have been spotted
scratching in the undergrowth. Friends of Kalorama Park and Parks Victoria are helping the forest
recover by removing weeds.
